Fieldwork in Challenging Contexts

A Conversation with Laura Berlingozzi.

Laura Berlingozzi is a postdoctoral researcher at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy, where she also earned her Ph.D. in Political Science, European Politics, and International Relations.

She has held visiting researcher positions at REPI (Recherche et Études en Politique Internationale) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and at Abdou Moumouni University in Niamey, Niger.

Her doctoral research examined the gender dimensions of insurgencies and counterinsurgency discourses and practices in Mali and Niger.

Drawing on feminist and postcolonial security studies, Laura’s research focuses on security and conflict in West Africa, with particular emphasis on:

  • Jihadist group dynamics
  • Practices of dialogue and negotiation
  • International interventionism

She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Mali, Niger, Mauritania, and Senegal and has also worked as a consultant for research centers and international organizations specializing in peacebuilding, security, and development.
